A tail light is an essential automotive component mounted at the rear of a vehicle, serving as a safety and signaling device. It illuminates in red to indicate the vehicle's presence, brake application, or turning intentions to other drivers, especially in low-visibility conditions.
Most modern tail light housings and lenses are manufactured using injection molding, a high-efficiency plastic manufacturing process. Thermoplastic materials like polycarbonate (PC) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) are commonly used due to their durability, impact resistance, and optical clarity. The process involves melting plastic pellets and injecting them into a precision-molded cavity under high pressure. For tail lights, the mold must ensure smooth surfaces for light diffusion and may incorporate textured or reflective features to enhance visibility.
Injection molding allows for complex geometries, such as integrated light guides or mounting brackets, while maintaining tight tolerances. Additionally, two-shot molding or overmolding techniques can be used to combine different materials (e.g., colored lenses with opaque housings) in a single cycle, reducing assembly steps. The result is a lightweight, cost-effective, and high-performance component that meets automotive safety standards.
